Yachting
Phuket Island is a perfect natural base for sailing. Professional yachting services and yachting facilities are available and the Andaman Sea has very good weather conditions all year and is comparable to any region in the world in this respect. Steady winds, clear skies, together with flat seas and clean, clear water allow for the finest sailing experiences. The long northeast monsoon season from November to May creates the best climate for sailing, with the best winds from November to February. There are a number of yacht charter companies offering both crewed and bareboat, including of course, the ubiquitous Sunsail. (More about Yachting in Phuket)
Golfing
Phuket has world-class golf courses some designed by renowned international architects and star golfers. The courses are set among a variety of exciting surroundings like amidst green mountains and by the deep blue sea. There are at least half a dozen courses either on Phuket or less than 1 hours drive away. (More about Goldfing in Phuket)
Fishing
Fishing in Phuket has yet to be discovered by the crowds, despite this year holding the 13th Phuket International Sportsfishing Classic.
Phuket has the advantage of being on the migratory path of a number of fish, and thus offers you fishing all year round. The Andaman Sea is home to a huge number of game fish; Black and Blue Marlin, Tuna, King Fish, Dorado, Wahoo, Giant Trevally, King Mackerel, Shark & Barracuda. Daily tours, and private charters, are available. Good fishing is available all year around. The period between June-August, when the seas can get rough, is especially good for sailfish. November is a good time to be fishing generally (hence the PISC is held in November); virtually every species of blue water fish can be caught in this month.
More and more, local operators are encouraging the trend of sustainable game fishing practices, i.e. catch and release. The Phuket Sportfishing Classic, for example, has from its inception insisted that billfish be recorded and then released alive, if they are to count as points in the competition. All sharks caught must also be released.
Windsurfing and Kitesurfing
Windsurfing equipment is available to rent at most major beaches. Boards may be rented by the hour, half-day, full day or week. Check at your beach for signs. Kitesurfing is just getting started here, so you may be able to arrange lessons or hire equipment. (More about Windsurfing and Kitesurfing in Phuket)
Mountain Biking
Many small, secluded roads in the countryside make Phuket a favourite spot for bicycle enthusiasts. Currently some good deals can be had for complete bikes since the Thai government has reduced the import duty on them as part of the health and fitness incentive. This does not apply to components however. Possibly the best shop on the island is Thalang Bikes run by Khun Paitoon, situated on the north-bound carriageway of Thepkasattri Road as you head out of Thalang for the airport and points north. There are also a number of tour companies offering guided tours of Phuket, and surrounding areas.
Kayaking and Canoeing
These activities are available in a number of formats, as typical one-day tours or as more extended tours involving overnight camping on island beaches. The majority of the tours are leading to the neighbouring Phang-Nga Bay and Krabi, where mangrove swamps and island grottoes are accessible only by sea canoe.
Water Skiing
Can be hired at most beaches. Check with the people from the speedboats. Normally the same team is also offering parachuting and banana boats.
Go-Karts
A Go-Kart speedway is available just over the hill from Patong on the way to Kathu and Phuket Town. Great fun for all the family.
